The Driving Test

The driving test for learner drivers to obtain a Full UK Driving Licence consists of two parts; the Theory Test, which includes a Hazard Perception Test and a practical Driving Test.

Theory Test

Once you have received and signed your Provisional driving licence, you can apply for a test by clicking here. The test consists of 50 multiple choice questions, requiring the examinee to have a detailed knowledge of all aspects of driving, including, but not limited to the Highway Code.

The pass mark is 43 out of 50 questions answered correctly, and the time allowed to complete the test is 57 minutes. The test is conducted on a computer screen, but don’t worry if your not computer literate; it’s a touch screen system and help is available.

Once completed, the system allows a three minute break, before starting the Hazard Perception test. The test consists of 14 video clips, which show a developing hazardous situation. Points are awarded for how quickly you perceive and react to the developing hazards. The pass mark is 44 out of a possible 75.

Practical Test Post 4th December 2017

To book your practical test, you must hold entitlement to drive in the form of a valid provisional driving licence, and have a theory test pass number. You can take the test Mon-Fri at a cost of £62 and £72 for a Saturday slot. The “L” test has been around since the 1930’s, and has evolved over time to reflect changes in the motoring environment.

A new test is being introduced from 4th December by DVSA, to ensure that all drivers have the skills to deal with modern driving and technology.

At present the Driving Standards Agency recommends that most learners take at least 45 hours of professional tuition lessons and at least 20 hours with friends and family. However as the new test is going to be somewhat more difficult, many will no doubt need more tuition, its only natural.

Your driving test will start with an eyesight check, which you must pass or the test will be cancelled and a failure recorded.

Prior to going out on the road, the examiner will ask one “tell me question” on vehicle safety, relating to such things as tyres, steering etc. The ” show me” question will be asked whilst out on the road.

Once on the road, the practical driving test will last for around 40 minutes, and will include different types of roads, a manoeuvre and one in three of you will have to carry out a controlled stop (emergency stop).

Included within the test is an element of “independent driving”, the duration of which is now 20 minutes, approximately half of the time allocated for testing. 4 out of 5 candidates  will have to safely follow directions given by a Sat Nav devise. The examiner will set the devise up, so students don’t have to worry.

On return to the test centre, the examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed. If you have picked up 15 or fewer minor driving faults, then a pass will be awarded.  More than 15 minor, or one serious or dangerous fault and you will fail the test.

Here is a video for you, it’s the DVSA guide to the new Driving Test

Why choose ADI?

Nine out of ten learners who passed the practical test on their first attempt were taught by an ADI rather than a friend or relative.
